What I’m Reading

I’m still reading Eating Animals.  It’s good but it isn’t the quickest book to get through.  While organizing on Thursday I found my old copy of Micheal Pollen’s Food Rules.

I bought it when it first came out years ago and I reread it last night because it is such a quick read.  It’s like all of the other food books I read in a small tidy version with out all the “sciencey” stuff.

I have a good idea of the things I want to purchase when I grocery shop.  Since I will be cutting back on meat I plan to only purchase tilapia and salmon (maybe shrimp) and a good variety of fruits and vegetables. I will also purchase quinoa which I was happy to learn is a seed not a grain. I’ve been thumbing through some recipe books and have a few recipes in mind.

I also got on the scale because I couldn’t help it and was down 3.5 pounds.  Yay!   I won’t weigh again until my regularly scheduled weigh in day. I kinda had the feeling that if I finally got my portions under control I could start losing.  My first mini goal is to get back down to my lowest weight of the year which was on  245.5 on 1/23/13. Only 5.5 pounds to go.  Yay, for eat less, move more!

How did you achieve your weight loss goal this week?

Consistency

Same old story, just a different day.  I could write about all the excuses of what happened (end of the year BBQ, graduation, graduation party…) but it doesn’t really excuse the fact that I didn’t have self control and I didn’t stick with my eating plan.

So today, again, I vow to get back on track and to remain CONSISTENT.  I am recommitting myself to logging my food into MyFitnessPal and exercise. For lunch I ate salad shrimp with peas and a sweet potato.  For dinner I put the ingredients for chicken tacos in the crock pot.  However, I plan to eat mine as a salad.

I packed a gym bag so I could either walk or go to the Y to exercise after I pick up my oldest.

I will update later.  Were you able to stick to your weight loss goals this weekend?

Cooking

I’ve never liked to cook.  Though I do enjoy eating!  Which is why my family eats out a LOT!  I know to lose weight I will HAVE to change this.  I’m thinking of creating a meal plan.  I want to stick to crockpot meals so we can eat straight away and the temptation to stop and eat out will be less.  I made porkchops in the crockpot last week.  I must say I wasn’t really thrilled with the seasonings I used.  So plan to do chicken this time.  Something I can shreed and make lettuce wraps with.

So  I began last Saturday I’ve lost 2.5 pounds.  Now if I  just manage to really stick to the plan many be I will see higher numbers.  Plus, its time to introduce exercise.

Community Based Instruction

Every week we take out students on community based instruction field trips.  This week we headed to Golden Corral to work on money skills.

I knew going to a buffet could be trouble.  So last night I thought about it and went in with a plan.  I knew it wouldn’t be logical to think that I would go there and not eat anything.  I ordered water and eat only rotisserie chicken and greens beans.  I had a bowl of various fruit.  I did pretty well with the overall meal.  I did want dessert, so I had some.  I eat a piece of carrot cake.  (Probably not the best choice but at least I didn’t go crazy!)

When we left I felt good that I was able to maintain control and mostly stick to primal eating. In the Cordain books he advocates the 85/15 rule.  So, a non paleo treat is okay here and there.

How strict are you with your primal/paleo eating?

Planning

I think I figured out why I had so much energy last night.  I made iced tea which I mixed with some fruit juice.  So I was pretty much on a caffeine high.  I had some tonight but I tried to remember not to have too much.

As far as eating goes I did well.  I only ate what I packed.  Which was shrimp, broccoli, and a clementine for lunch.  I got home and had a hard boiled egg for a snack while I made dinner.  I cooked tilapia and broccoli.  Quick and simple, my kind of cooking.  I boiled up some more eggs for tomorrow.

Not sure how packing meals for my son is going to turn out.  He told me today his teacher gave him pretzels and a fruit snack with his breakfast (What?!)  Then I forgot about the after school program.  When I went to pick him up the snack was cantaloupe (not bad!) with a mini bagel and cream cheese ( a no no).  I guess I could just talk to his teacher and send food for an after school snack.  Ugh! Decisions   I need to stop being lazy about it.  I may need to wait until summer camp starts.  When everybody has to pack.  He’ll eat breakfast at home and pack a lunch and a snack.  We shall see…

Jumping topics here but I tend to make these elaborate plans and then not follow through with them.  This time I don’t want to put that kind of pressure on myself and instead take each day daily.  I still have goals in the back of my mind I wouldn’t mind accomplishing.  Mostly focused on the amount of weight I’d like to lose.  It’s probably good to have goals and something to work towards.

Are you a planner?

Two More

This sure has been a crazy starting week.  But I feel like this last two days, I’ve gotten into a groove with my eating.  I am encouraged because despite my struggles, I put up a two pound weight lose. Yay!  At class this morning I had time to plan out a couple of meals and make a grocery list.  My oldest son had his first basketball game (he made a two pointer!!!) we headed to Martin’s and picked up eats for the week.  The grocery store was super packed and the lines out of control but I was able to get out with spending just under $100 dollars.  Not bad.  I planned a couple of crock pot meals.  And I am hoping there will be enough left over for lunches.  The boys probably won’t eat it but I bought fabric fixings for them, if they don’t like what I made.

I’m looking forward to slowly making more changes and dropping this weight.  I made a new goal as well.  I want to shock my extended family.  there is a family reunion in July.  Everyone saw me last in November, I want to look drastically different.
